The Story: Written by Joss Whedon and drawn by John Cassaday. Ord of the Breakworld has a mission: since the people of his warlike race have foreseen that a mutant from Earth will destroy their empire, he must wipe out all mutants on the planet. To that end, he recruits Dr. Kavita Rao of Benetech Laboratories to develop the mutant antidote later called Hope. She agrees and their unlikely ally in this insidious plot is none other than the international spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D. The Sentient Worlds Observation and Response Department (S.W.O.R.D.), a division of S.H.I.E.L.D. headed by Special Agent Abigail Brand, has struck a deal with Ord in order to stave off invasion, which will come unless Hope can eliminate the future mutant threat to the Breakworld. What the X-Men find most offensive about this scheme, however, is Benetech's practice of testing Hope on mutants, particularly their long-lost comrade Colossus.
