The Story: While the X-Men race to confront a hostage situation in an attempt not only to save the day but to establish their superhero credibility with the public a renown geneticist, Dr. Kavita Rao, announces to the world that she’s found a “cure” for the mutant gene. A short opening sequence completes the chilling opening of last issue and leads to Dr. Rao’s press conference. By choosing such a young subject with such a horrifying mutant, her nightmares manifest themselves in reality, Whedon has presented an interesting moral dilemma. The X-Men are instantly appalled that Dr. Rao views mutation as a disease to be eradicated. But who can really claim that the little girl and the world at large would not be better off if her mutation could be eliminated? Of course it remains to be seen if anything connected with Dr. Rao can be taken at face value.
